Tuesday 24th September – bike ***** Benouville – Near Pegasus bridge – Sunny and hot:)

Glorious day and far too nice to travel south again so after a trip to Hyper U to get the stuff we couldn’t get at Lidl yesterday we set out to visit the Maison de la Nature at Sallenelles on the Orme estuary. We thought you had to pay to get in so returned to the van to get the 4 euros but when we got back it was shut for lunch! It turned out you didn’t have to pay anyway, that was for an exhibition and we only wanted to walk. After all these months the superglue on my sunglasses gave up so we returned to the van again and glued them. We decided to cycle along the path towards the Pegasus bridge, famous for its part in World War 2 so packed our lunch and really enjoyed the nature reserve (saw a kingfisher, a marsh harrier and ….. Spoonbills! That’s a first:)) Couldn’t quite understand why there were so many men shooting ducks on a nature reserve??? They had lots of decoy ducks and shots were being fired all over the marshes:( As we went over the estuary bridge we saw a huge seal swimming up river:) We had our lunch watching the most enormous ship steered by two tugs, front and rear, going through the raised Pegasus bridge:) It only just scraped through! We read and had a rest before cycling back and picking some blackberries too. Went past where we are parked to see more of the reserve. While we were cycling we saw the perfect place to stop, right on the bank of the canal just up from the bridge so drove there and got the kettle on! There are other campers here but not a problem. Had several visits from a beautiful female cat, she was very affectionate and, of course, we couldn’t resist feeding her! Mag thinks she might have kittens somewhere. I walked round to the other side of the canal to take a photo of the van as the sun went down and we went for a walk over the bridge after tea.
